Hair loss in Men

“Losing your hair isn’t usually anything to be worried about but it can be upsetting. It’s normal to lose hair. We can lose between 50 and 100 hairs a day, often without noticing – Hair loss in men is serious”.

Androgenetic hair loss is seen in both men and women but is more dramatic in men. Thyroid disease, anemia, protein deficiency, chemotherapy, and low vitamin levels may also cause hair loss. Alopecia is a form of hair loss produced by the autoimmune destruction of hair follicles in localised areas of the skin.

Calum Best, the reality star underwent a hair transplant before appearing in Celebrity Big Brother in 2015.

“There is no doubt the three procedures have changed my life. No man wants to be bald when he is older,” he said. “I have been losing my hair since my early 20s. Nature’s plan was for me to have thin and patchy hair across the top of my scalp.”

Another celebrity, Christopher Reeve, (famous for his role in the original Superman films) revealed in his autobiography that he had alopecia areata at the age of 16. He is thought to have had steroid injections every three months whilst filming Superman in 1978 in an attempt to regrow his hair.

The words ‘Hair loss’, can make even the toughest of men shiver. Hair loss can be seen as very damaging to a man’s confidence and self-esteem as a full head of hair usually signifies youth.

Former England, Everton, and Manchester United star Wayne Rooney underwent a transplant in 2011. He shared the news on Twitter by posting a picture of his scalp, which he captioned: “Just to confirm to all my followers I have had a hair transplant. I was going bald at 25 why not. I’m delighted with the result. “It’s still a bit bruised and swollen when it dies down u will be first to see it”.

Symptoms of Hair Loss

Hair loss can appear in many different ways, depending on what’s causing it. It can come on suddenly or gradually and affect just your scalp or your whole body. Some types of hair loss are temporary, and others are permanent.

Signs and symptoms of hair loss may include:

Gradual thinning on top of the head

This is the most common type of hair loss, affecting both men and women as they age. In men, hair often begins to recede from the forehead in a line that resembles the letter M.

Circular or patchy bald spots

Some people experience smooth, coin-sized bald spots. This type of hair loss usually affects just the scalp, but it sometimes also occurs in beards or eyebrows. In some cases, your skin may become itchy or painful before the hair falls out.

Sudden loosening of hair

A physical or emotional shock can cause hair to loosen. Handfuls of hair may come out when combing or washing your hair or even after gentle tugging. This type of hair loss usually causes overall hair thinning and not bald patches.

Here are some of the reasons why men lose their hair:

Genetics has an essential role in determining whether or not you will be bald and if so, when are where it will occur.

There are three main patterns of balding that take place. The first starts at the temple and is called the anterior hairline. It then proceeds to move backward. The second pattern is at the crown where it usually circles around in a whorl and spreads outwards. The third is found at the mid-frontal scalp and is usually most prominent in Asian men.

Sexual Hormones

Hormones are the major cause of natural balding. Enzymes in male bodies convert testosterone into something called dihydrotestosterone.

The amount of dihydrotestosterone is down to genetics but it is unknown whether the father’s genes or mother’s genes determine how many enzymes are produced. Scientists believe that Asian men have less of this enzyme in their hair, and people believe that this is why they can often keep their hair longer than Caucasian men.

Age is another key factor in balding. Hair loss can occur twenty percent in your twenties, thirty percent in your thirties, and any time after puberty, so the older you get, the higher chance you have of losing your hair.

This is also balanced out by the fact that as men reach forty, any hair loss is pretty stable and if occurring at all, tends to do so at a reduced and slower rate than younger men.

Stress can cause hair loss, but the good news is that this is rarely permanent. There are three different types of hair loss that are related to stress.

Alopecia Areata describes a sudden loss of large clumps of hair in areas around your scalp. Related to this is Telogen Effluvium, which is a condition where more hairs than normal prepare to fall out. Likewise, Trichotillomania is a habitual condition caused by stress and anxiety where the person pulls out hairs without realising it.

Diet and Sleeping

Your diet and how well you sleep can affect your hair loss. Your lifestyle is held responsible for a lot of bodily defenses and functionalities. A good diet can help get your entire body healthier, including stronger hair.

Relying on junk food can lead to nutritional deficiencies, which may also contribute to baldness. Sleeping helps your body repair and regenerate overnight and it is essential to get as many hours of it as you can. The less sleep you have, the more stressed you may be. So it does connect with that element as well.

Although there are ways of slowing down the process of hair loss, these options do not restore or bring hair back. The hair transplant option is the only way to permanently restore lost follicles of hair.

Male-related hair loss can lead to negative effects on the self-esteem of a man. So over the years, a number of treatments have been developed to help prevent, slow down, and even overcome hair loss. (The following are all available at the Regrow Hair Centre)

FUE Hair Transplant

Regrow Hair Centre offers the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method as it is a proven, minimally invasive outpatient procedure in which follicular unit grafts, consisting of a small number of hair follicles, are individually removed from the genetically stronger areas of the scalp (the ‘donor’ areas) and artistically restored to your thinning areas (the ‘recipient’ areas).

Our experienced Hair Transplant surgeons use the FUE natural graft replacement process to recreate your hairline and growth pattern for a permanent, natural-looking result. As there are no linear scars or stitches required, your donor area will heal in a few days.

Photo Diode Therapy (PDT)

The laser therapy machine at the Regrow Hair Centre offers the following benefits:

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

During a PRP session, a small amount of blood is drawn from the patient (11ml at Regrow Hair Centre) and then processed in a centrifuge machine. This centrifuge separates the Platelet-Rich Plasma portion of the blood from the rest of its components. Once this has been accomplished, the PRP is reinjected subcutaneously into the patient’s scalp.

The success rate of PRP treatment is respectably very high. Over the past few years, PRP treatment has become extremely popular as an effective hair loss treatment. One of the major reasons for this is that it is a non-surgical and therapeutic stimulating treatment. The high success rate of this treatment has further increased its popularity and has made it one of the most sought-after hair loss treatments.

Over the years numerous studies have been conducted by Scientists and Dermatologists alike that have indicated that a PRP procedure is one of the most successful non-surgical treatments for hair loss. In most cases, the treatment has shown visible results in 3-4 months.

In an October 2017 research study published in the European journal of medical research, doctors confirmed earlier research that suggests one of the ways PRP promotes hair growth and increases the number of hair follicles is by inducing angiogenesis. The formation of new blood vessels brings growth factors to the scalp.

Finasteride: 1mg Tablets

Finasteride helps to lower the levels of DHT in the scalp, by helping to reverse the balding process as well as promote hair growth. Men with mild to moderate, but not complete, hair loss can expect to benefit from the use of FINASTERIDE 1MG. This is not suitable for women.

Minoxidil Solution 5%

This is rubbed into the bald patches and has been shown to promote hair regrowth in most cases. This is the same treatment that is used for common male pattern baldness.

HR23+ Vitamins

Some studies suggest that biotin or vitamin H could be useful in treating hair loss. Biotin is used to build hair, skin, and nails and the study says that if combined with zinc, it can help lower DHT.

Regrow Hair Centre uses HR23+ as its main supplier of vitamins designed to regrow hair which includes all of the vital ingredients like Biotin, Vitamin C, and Saw Palmento – in fact, HR23+ uses 23 key ingredients designed to help with your hair loss, 90% of users noticed visible results.
