Balding men: Male pattern baldness and other causes
Male pattern baldness, also known as ‘androgenetic alopecia’, is the most common cause of balding in men. It usually begins with a receding hairline but is soon accompanied by crown balding. In severe cases, a combination of hair thinning at the back of the head and thinning hair on top of the head can leave only what is known as ‘horseshoe hair’. For reasons not entirely understood, hair at the back and sides of the head is more resistant to male pattern balding.
Most other causes of hair loss in men do not generally follow a pattern and are most often caused by the likes of medication, diet, stress, or thyroid abnormalities. Even rarer disorders such as scarring alopecia or trichotillomania (compulsive hair pulling) can cause hair loss in men.
What is male patterned baldness ?
Male Pattern Baldness is a genetic condition. It can be passed down from either side of the family. Hair loss is caused by a by-product of testosterone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It is not the amount of DHT that results in hair loss, but rather the hair’s genetic susceptibility to it. The genetics at play are complicated; a bald father does not necessarily guarantee hair loss, but it does make it more likely.
DHT attaches to the hair follicles and causes them to shrink over time. The hair then gets thinner and thinner. A man in his mid-forties is most likely to notice at least some thinning hair on the head.
